The Paramount Group requested the expertise of the visionary architects at Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), Shawmut Design and Construction, and our team at Plan B Engineering to navigate the complexities of modernizing a 100-year-old, landmarked building adjacent to a 52-story tower dating from 1992. The project’s main feature was to connect the two buildings via a new light-filled atrium, creating a new space that will serve as a grand stage for a luxury retailer’s expansion across four floors.
A central concern that defined our approach to demolition, bracing, and sequencing was the need to protect the building’s iconic Lalique windows. Dating back to 1910, these windows showcase exquisite Art Nouveau flowers, stretching from the second to the fourth floors. In order to properly showcase the windows, existing catwalks had to be carefully removed and access provided to build new glass viewing balconies.
This project also involved realigning floor plates and creating new elevator shafts, ensuring that every aspect of the building’s structural integrity and functionality aligns with contemporary standards while respecting its historic essence.
We’re proud to have contributed to a project that stands as a testament to the fusion of history and innovation in the heart of New York City.
