US Capitol Dome Restoration

Washington, DC

In 2014, the Architect of the Capitol launched a $60 million project to repair cracks, restore windows, and repaint the Capitol’s historic cast-iron dome. The dome’s structure posed a unique challenge with limited options for scaffold support, risking stability and access.

Partnering with BrandSafway, Plan B Engineering developed a custom solution. We designed a self-supporting scaffold using modular systems, reinforced with “compression ring” plan bracing levels. This innovative design allowed the scaffold to remain independently stable under all construction and environmental loads. Additionally, the enclosed system provided a controlled work environment while shielding the public from construction debris.

This approach not only ensured the project’s success but also achieved time and cost savings, preserving this national treasure for future generations.
